Nigerian Students And Their Double Life.

According to the information gathered by Campus Sun correspondents, Nigerian students tend to play games pretending to be virgins at home and in reality live with lovers on campus.

The journalists spoke with numerous young people, who provided shocking confirmations, which will be given later below.

Generally, it turns out that a substantial number of undergraduates live in the world of lies, “where sex is cheaper than a pot of porridge”, as the Sun journalist characterized it.

According to the report a lot of students , especially girls, live for their partners. They wash the man’s clothes, clean the room and cook as if they were married. Single at home, but married on campus, for 4 years.

According to the Sun, cohabitation, or “campus couple”, is a widespread phenomenon concerning those students who live without the consent of their parents. Explaining why they do it, the interviewed people said it allows them to determine their compatibility status, as they get to study themselves before marriage (one of the reasons).

It is believed that only exam period reminds them of the studies, while the rest of the academic year is spent on “family practice”.

Some also cohabit for economic and financial reasons, it was revealed.

David Odia, a student of the Federal Polytechnic Auchi (Auchi Poly), explained:

“It is very romantic to live together as husband and wife, doing things in common, taking collective decision as a family. In fact, the period prepares one for family life. This has helped many undergraduates to discover their spouses to which they are happily married today.”

Amaka Okoro (real name witheld), narrated she was forced to cohabit being unable to secure accommodation on campus:

“Ever since I came here, I am more or less a mother. I do all the washing, cooking and domestic work. My academic programme is suffering as I find it hard to read my books, which is my primary reason for being in school.I feel bored at times. Whenever my fiancé and I have a quarrel, he abuses and molests me which gives me psychological and health problems.”

She confessed that her parents knew nothing about it. She added that some of her female friends engage in vices like stealing, lying and cybercrimes to raise fund to sustain the relationship.

A student of Medical Physiology, the University of Benin (UNIBEN) told the correspondent:

“The trend is rampant here in Ekosodin. Those that engage in it are the ‘happening’ girls and guys on the campus. The practice is really expensive and as such we respect those that engage in the act. What most UNIBEN students do here is to disguise that they are staying in their fellowship secretariat off-campus, which is not true. When you properly investigate the matter, you will find out that most of them are staying with their boyfriends off-campus. There was the case of a 200 level law student whose father is a politician in Lagos. She was staying with a student-pastor here in Ekosodin. As a result of her affluence, she was always demanding money from her father to sustain the relationship. They later made her the vice president of the campus fellowship. You need to see the way this girl was playing out the role of a wife to the student-pastor and neglecting her studies. Her parents became disturbed and told a relative that stays in the school hostel to find out where she lives. She was exposed and that was how the friendship ended.”

Speaking about another aspect of cohabitation, social worker Rachael Omoregie characterize the students’ behaviour as “sexual immorality” saying that girls’s pregnancy usually makes them drop school. Moreover, Omoregie lamented over abortions, which can be attributed to cohabitation, in her opinion.

“These students are not ready for parenting and can do everything within their powers to flush out pregnancies when they occur.”

Not all young people were FOR such way of living. For example Ese Akpovete, a graduating student of Physics at the Delta State University, Abraka, insisted this practice should stop as sexual breakups are likely to cause the depressive conditions associated with suicide attempts.

Joy Musa, HND 2, Mass Communication, Nuhu Bamalli Polytechnic (NUBA POLY) Kaduna, stressed the role of parents and explained how they could help their children:

“Parents who toil day and night to see their wards through school should cultivate the habit of paying them unscheduled visit in order to find out what they are doing in school. If students know that their parents would pay them visit without prior notice, they would be restrained in their wild adventure.”

What is your opinion on the issue: cohabitation – evil trend or just the mark of the modern society?

It’s Official: Side Boob, Cray, YOLO Added To Oxford Dictionary

Oxford’s editors have welcomed a new batch of words to their database, validating young people and making life less confusing for old people.

Oxford Dictionaries, the arm of the Oxford family that focuses on current English, announced on Wednesday that they’ve added the latest batch of words to their ranks. Put into haiku form, reflections of humanity in 2014 could easily look something like this:

Hyperconnected hot mess.

YOLO? FML.

Or this:

Side boob. Cray clickbait.

Second screen. Live-tweet. Throw shade.

ICYMI.

Yes, each of those is a new entry in Oxford’s online database that collects modern uses of words. And that’s just a small sample of the many adorbs (adj., arousing great delight) additions.

For all those who are ready to set their quills to parchment and declare the end of the English language, now that such frivolous terms are getting respect from Oxford, please keep in mind that this is not the Oxford English Dictionary. That arm of the family is more like the serious and intellectual grandfather who constantly withholds his approval from younger generations. In other words, the OED editors require words to have much more historical, significant impact before adding them to that reference.

Caveats made, here is a selection of Oxford Dictionaries’ noobs:

acquihire (n.): buying out a company primarily for the skills and expertise of its staff.

adorbs (adj.): arousing great delight; cute or adorable.

air punch (n.): thrusting one’s clenched fist up into the air, typically as a gesture of triumph.

amazeballs (adj.): very impressive, enjoyable, or attractive.

anti-vax (adj.): opposed to vaccination.

binge-watch (v.): watch multiple episodes of a television program in rapid succession.

bro hug (n.): a friendly embrace between two men.

clickbait (n.): (on the Internet) content whose main purpose is to attract attention and draw visitors to a particular web page.

cray (adj.): crazy, but without that time-consuming extra syllable.

Deep Web (n.): the part of the World Wide Web that is not discoverable by means of standard search engines.

doncha (contraction): don’t you.

douchebaggery (n.): obnoxious or contemptible behaviour.

e-cig (n.): another term for electronic cigarette.

fandom (n.): the fans of a particular person, team, series, etc., regarded collectively as a community or subculture.

fast follower (n.): a company that quickly imitates the innovations of its competitors.

5:2 diet (n.): a diet that involves eating normally for five days out of a seven-day period and greatly restricting the amount of food eaten on the other two days.

FML (abbrev.): (vulgar slang) f— my life! (used to express dismay at a frustrating personal situation)

hate-watch (v.): watch (a television program usually) for the sake of the enjoyment derived from mocking or criticizing it.

hot mess (n.): a person or thing that is spectacularly unsuccessful or disordered.

hot mic (n.): a microphone that is turned on, in particular one that broadcasts a spoken remark that was intended to be private.

humblebrag (n. & v.): (make) an ostensibly modest or self-deprecating statement whose actual purpose is to draw attention to something of which one is proud.

hyperconnected (adj.): characterized by the widespread or habitual use of devices that have Internet connectivity.

ICYMI (abbrev.): in case you missed it.

listicle (n.): an Internet article presented in the form of a numbered or bullet-pointed list.

live-tweet (v.): post comments about (an event) on Twitter while the event is taking place.

mansplain (v.): (of a man) explain something to someone, typically a woman, in a manner regarded as condescending or patronizing.

mud run (n.): an event in which participants negotiate a course consisting of obstacles filled or covered with mud.

neckbeard (n.): growth of hair on a man’s neck, especially when regarded as indicative of poor grooming.

Paleo diet (n.): a diet based on the type of foods presumed to have been eaten by early humans.

second screen (n.): a mobile device used while watching television, especially to access supplementary content or applications.

sentiment analysis (n.): the process of computationally identifying and categorizing opinions expressed in a piece of text.

side boob (n.): the side part of a woman’s breast, as exposed by a revealing item of clothing.

side-eye (n.): a sidelong glance expressing disapproval or contempt.

smartwatch (n.): a mobile device with a touchscreen display, worn on the wrist.

SMH (abbrev.): shaking (or shake) my head (used to express disapproval, exasperation, etc.).

spit take (n.): (especially as a comic technique) an act of suddenly spitting out liquid one is drinking in response to something funny or surprising.

subtweet (n.): (on Twitter) a post that refers to a particular user without directly mentioning them, typically as a form of furtive mockery or criticism.

tech-savvy (n.): well informed about or proficient in the use of modern technology.

time-poor (adj.): spending much of one’s time working or occupied.

throw shade (phr.): publicly criticize or express contempt for someone.

vape (v.): inhale and exhale the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device.

WDYT (abbrev.): what do you think?

YOLO (abbrev.): you only live once (expressing the view that one should make the most of the present moment).

Meet The First Woman To Win Nobel Prize For Maths

The Nobel Prize of mathematics has for the first time been given to a woman, and was given to an Iranian-born mathematician named Maryam Mirzakhani.

Maryam had been educated in Harvard and is a professor at Stanford University in California, and was just announced as one of four winners of the prestigious award.

Maryam Mirzakhani

Mirzakhani said: “This is a great honour. I will be happy if it encourages young female scientists and mathematicians”.

“I am sure there will be many more women winning this kind of award in coming years,” she added.

The awards committee praised Mirzakhani’s work on the fields of geometry and dynamical systems, particularly in understanding the symmetry of curved surfaces such as spheres.

Despite her work being said to be “pure mathematics” and is mostly theoretical, It can be applied to physics and quantum field theory, as well as for the study of prime numbers and cryptography.

“Fluent in a remarkably diverse range of mathematical techniques and disparate mathematical cultures, she embodies a rare combination of superb technical ability, bold ambition, far-reaching vision, and deep curiosity,” the ICM said in a statement.

Mirzakhani was born in Tehran in 1977 and got her PhD in 2004 from Harvard, She won the 2009 Blumenthal Award for the Advancement of Research in Pure Mathematics and the 2013 Satter Prize of the American Mathematical Society.

The Fields Medal is awarded every four years and mostly to winners over the age of 40.

As there is no Nobel Prize awarded for mathematics, the Fields Medal is the highest achievement for a Mathematician in the World.

Meet The Nigerian Who Returned To School At 77

Bode Ogunlana (OFR), is 82 years old, a guru in insurance business who decided to go back to school at 77, a feat that has made him more famous.

He said that he doesn’t blame the younger generation who study to pass for a career, for him, he studied for pleasure and to deepen his knowledge

“I enjoyed it so much that I went on and did the Master of Arts (in English Literature). At the end of the programme, which I passed with merit, I took a picture with the Chancellor, who was so thrilled, and it was in the newspapers.

His kids didn’t want him to stress himself much and they even tried to discourage from going back to school.

He added “The age disparity was no problem for me because I was used to working with young people. The average age of students in my class, without me, at that time was about 22.

“Age is not a disease or barrier. It is an advantage, but it depends on every individual. Some of them feel lazy, claiming they are too old.

“ One is never too old for anything. You are never too old to pursue your dreams or achieve them. Nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it.

8 Year Old Nigerian Boy Comes 2nd In UK Child Genius Competition

Jonathan Reveals When Boko Haram Will End

President Goodluck Jonathan has revealed that the menace of the dreaded terrorist group, Boko Haram will end by next month as he guaranteed that things will change.

The President made the revelation on Thursday in Abuja, while speaking at the 66th National Executive Committee, NEC of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Vanguard reports.

He said the security challenge posed by the sect who have been killing innocent Nigerians as well as the destruction of properties estimated at billions of naira would drastically change.

President Jonathan, who acknowledged that the current problem bedeviling the country was insecurity, reiterated that the happenings in the country were beyond terrorism, saying it was a plot to separate where the militants desire to install their own leadership.

The Nigeria’s first citizen hinted that he will be attending the United Nations General Assembly summit on Global Terrorism where all the super powers are expected to deliberate on terrorism. He commiserated with the families of those that lost relatives in the Kaduna and Kano states attacks.

“Nigeria is having an unfair share. Terror is a global problem, and Nigeria situation is going beyond terror. When terrorists think about holding ground, attempting to install leadership, it is no longer terrorism; it is almost like going into the line of succession. Between now and October, things will change”he said.

The President thanked the Senate and the entire National Assembly for their statement and support towards government’s decision to bring an end to insurgency.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army said another 60 insurgents were killed in the battle that ensued on Wednesday night, after the terrorists reportedly went to regroup to cause more mayhem in Konduga town.

The confrontation which reportedly lasted for about four hours, led to the killing of some of the sect members and the recovery of several military hardware including 13 AK-47 rifles, five RPGs, two General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMGs) and one anti-aircraft gun. Two Ford Ranger pick-up vehicles used for mounting anti-aircraft attack was also recovered.

It would be recalled that the President Jonathan on September 18, 2014, reacted to his endorsement by the National Executive Committee, NEC of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP as the party’s sole Presidential candidate for 2015 Presidential election. The PDP had fixed its presidential primaries for December 6, 2014.

Niger State Schools to Resume October due to Eid-el Kabir

The Niger State government has postponed the resumption date for all schools in the state till October due to the upcoming Eid-el Kabir Muslim festival.

Announcing the new resumption date for public schools in the state, Governor Babangida Aliyu said the state government took into account the forthcoming Eid-el Kabir Muslim festival expected to hold worldwide in the first week of October.

The federal government had shifted the resumption date for all private and public schools in the country to Monday September 22nd, 2014 as a result of the recent outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease in some states of the federation.
